To figure out how many gallons per hour or minute your pool is losing, you will need to measure the dimensions of your swimming pool and use data from a bucket test. By using these two pieces of information together, it should be easier for you to determine if there's any leak in your pool.

CALCULATION EXAMPLES:

Example #1:

A pool owner says his 17×25 pool is losing 2 inches per day. How many gallons is the pool losing per day?
The formula is: L (x) W (x) WL (x) .6233 = Gallons Lost
The given values are: L = 25′ W=17′ WL=2″
Plugging the values into the formula we have:
25 (x) 17 (x) 2 (x) .6233 = 529.81 gallons
The 530 Gallons lost also gives you an idea of how big the leak is that you are looking for. The example also means that they are losing:
  • 22.1 gallons per hour! (530 divided by 24) and …
  • 0.368 gallons per minute! (22.1 divided by 60)

Example #2:

A spa owner says he has to add 2 inches of water daily to his 11′ diameter spa. How many gallons of water is the pool losing? The formula for round pools and spas is:
Diameter (feet) (x) Diameter (x) WL (x) .48929 = Gallons Lost

The given values are: Diameter= 11 feet WL= 2 inches

So, plugging the values into the formula, we have:
11 (x) 11 (x) 2 (x) .48929 = 118.41 Gallons lost in 24 hours
